6 Fictional Literary Characters I Want to be Friends With
Have you ever finished a book and felt a true connection to the protagonist? I read a lot of fiction and sometimes after I’ve closed the book, I find myself missing the characters. I know that makes me a nerdy bibliophile, but I also know I’m not alone. I’ve read more books than I can count, but these fictional characters have stuck with me throughout my lifetime.
Anne Shirley
First and foremost, my ride or die. Anne Shirley is my childhood. She’s so positive and spirited, I just adore everything about her. She’s an eternal daydreamer and the best “kindred spirit” anyone could hope to find in their lifetime. She’s fun and adventurous and is a fellow aesthete, so you know your adventures would always be beautiful.
Jo March
Anne Shirley is my top pick, but Jo March is a close second. I think the best way to describe Jo is “plucky.” She’s willful and hot-tempered, but the most loyal friend one would hope to find. She seems like the type of person who would always push you to achieve your dreams and never let anything stand in your way.
Atticus Finch
Truthfully, the world would be a better place if there were more people like Atticus Finch IRL. I just imagine my life would have so many more good-natured morality lectures if he were around for real.
Elizabeth Bennet
Even Jane Austen wanted to be besties with Elizabeth Bennet. She said, “I must confess that I think her as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print,” and I wholeheartedly agree. She’s incredibly smart and has a quick wit not often found in 19th-century literature. She’s the best friend to Charlotte and her sisters, so you know she’d always be there for you and have a good time while doing it.
Dickon Sowerby
My childhood was mostly Anne of Green Gables, but the rest of it was made up of The Secret Garden and A Little Princess. Dickon was always my favorite character in The Secret Garden because he was so kind and good-natured. Even the animals followed him around, he was basically a pre-teen male Snow White. I think the world could use more people with his sweet spirit.
Pea Eye Parker
I love this character so much I named my dog after him. He’s not the brightest (the character, not my dog), but he is the kindest, most reliable friend you could hope to find.
