An Appreciation for Quiet Mornings

Life has been loud lately. Like most people, I’ve had my spouse and my child at home with me 24/7 while schools and businesses have been closed. Taylor and I talk often about how our introverted nature is actually struggling right now, despite our inability to leave the house, which should be an introvert’s dream. Being an introvert is more than about the desire to stay home. It’s about needing that time to yourself to recharge, and that often requires quiet.

I’ve always been an earlier riser than my husband. He goes into work later than most people do, so he doesn’t need to wake up early in the morning, plus he’s a natural night owl. Even my 4-year-old is a late sleeper, I know, I’m #blessed. My boys like to sleep in past 8 a.m., but I have found such an appreciation for quiet mornings.

Once upon a time, when women were birds, there was the simple understanding that to sing at dawn and to sing at dusk was to heal the world through joy.
— Terry Tempest Williams

Quiet mornings are an opportunity for solace. For starting the day fresh and with intention. Trust me, I appreciate sleep as much as the next person, but I’ve found these purposeful quiet mornings to myself to be the most magical time of day. Each morning, I get up and catch the sunrise with a cup of coffee and just listen. I love to listen to the silence. I love listening to the songs of the birds outside. There’s something beautiful about just taking a breath before the rest of the world wakes up and the day begins to move.

It is a serious thing // just to be alive / on this fresh morning / in this broken world.
— Mary Oliver

Quiet mornings allow you to appreciate what’s around you like you’re the only person in the world. Before the noise of the day begins to creep in or the business of the daily “routine” worms its way into your setting. Especially these days when you wake up and have the ability to roll over and instantly be inundated with news and alerts, these quiet moments are precious.

A quiet morning tells us, in various beautiful ways, that every day of our life is a new beginning. When you take in the earliest morning hours, you get to witness incredible things. The morning sun beams peeking through the clouds, birds going about their morning rituals, a gentle cool breeze, and golden light everywhere, covering natural and man-made creations, full of beauty and magic, all filled with that promise of a new beginning.

It’s pure magic, these pockets of early solitude. The gift of witnessing the earth opening its eyelids is like no other. It’s a humbling, reassuring, blissful experience. It’s an amazing feeling to be one of the first to breathe the fresh air, to hear the bird’s new song and watch the world wake up around you.

Ô, Sunlight! The most precious gold to be found on Earth.
